There’s two family moments in the genesis of this song. A happy, sharing moment for you, and a bittersweet, poignant moment that ended up being a very fulfilling one for Cole. So you’re at an event, take the story from there.ĪG: Yeah, we’re at Gillette Stadium, which is very cool, in Boston. Luke Bryan has sold it out, Cole Swindell is one of the openers. If you haven’t seen a country show at one of the NFL stadiums, it’s a crazy amount of people.Īnd by the way, if people don’t know, Cole’s fans are fanatics!ĪG: Yes, and at this point, he had a hit-and-a-half, probably. They were all out there at 6, or whenever he was playing it was packed. We were on one of those bus trips where you write three, four, five songs. You write every second he’s not playing or having to do an interview. We were working on what would be his next record, "You Should Be Here." Swindell continues his ascent with an impressive collection of heartfelt country. You Should Be Here is a seamless combination of top-shelf pop mischief (No Can Left Behind, the Dierks Bentley-assisted Flatliner) and devastating ballads (the gorgeous, career-defining title cut) that accentuates his talent for delivering the latter. Out of one of those moments, I was just walking around (the stadium) by myself. I like to walk up to the nosebleeds and back, just kind of take it in, and take a little panoramic shot. My daughter is a great country music fan. She loves it, and she loves going to shows. Like any songwriter would, I had a little double take and thought “Oh, that sounds like it could be a title, could be an idea.” So I just text her what was going on: a picture of (the stadium) and just said, “You should be here,” in the text. We had written two or three songs already over the last two or three days. This was one of the later ones so I took it back to the bus. As a partial architect of bro-country, Cole Swindell can't be expected to jettison the swaggering sound once it starts to get a little long in the tooth. Later on that next afternoon, I brought that idea up. As a commercially savvy songwriter, however, he knows he needs to expand his reach for a second album, which is what he does on 2016's You Should Be Here. We kind of immediately knew what it should be about. Even though it came from, like you said, a happy really impacted him on the situation with his dad.īecause Cole lost his father in a tragic accident right on the cusp of his success. So he takes his idea to honor his dad.ĪG: Yes. We even toyed with the idea of going fully personal with it, or try to do different vignettes. We both agreed it should just be about him, and people can apply it however they want. It was not necessarily the (kind of) song that he was becoming known for, but I think it was important to show another side of Cole. Every time I’ve seen him perform it, you can feel the emotion. djh this song is perfect.I’ve got to think his dad knows about it.
